What this actually is

FoundationAgents/MetaGPT is an open source multi-agent framework on GitHub. Verified 2026-09-04 against the GitHub API: 70,211 stars, 8,924 forks, MIT licence, Python.

Its own description is "The Multi-Agent Framework: First AI Software Company, Towards Natural Language Programming", and the core idea is written in the README as a formula: Code = SOP(Team). It takes a standard operating procedure, the kind a real software company runs on, and hands each step to a different LLM role.
