Why six separate sites
There is no single national unclaimed-money database. Different kinds of holders report to different systems: states, the federal pension insurer, the FDIC, a private retirement registry, and the IRS. About $70 billion sits across all of them combined, and roughly 1 in 7 Americans has something in at least one.
Checking one site and stopping is why most searches come back empty. Here are all six, with the exact page to search on each.

| 05 | 401(k) or retirement plan balance from a job you left | www.unclaimedretirementbenefits.com This one asks for your SSN on the search page itself, not just at claim time. Type that one yourself, do not hand it to an agent. |
| 06 | A tax refund check that was mailed and came back undelivered | www.irs.gov/refunds The "Where's My Refund" tool; it can also start a refund trace if a check went missing. |
