What this is

Rowboat is an open source project from Rowboat Labs, a Y Combinator S24 company founded by Arjun Maheswaran and Ramnique Singh. It is on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 licence, which is the permissive one: you can use it commercially, modify it, and ship it inside your own product, as long as you keep the licence and the notices.

Every number and claim in this guide was read from the project's own GitHub repository and from ycombinator.com on 4 August 2026. Where something could not be confirmed from a primary source it is marked as such rather than repeated.

The facts, and where each one comes from

  • Repository: github.com/rowboatlabs/rowboat
  • 16,974 stars and 1,687 forks, read from the repository on 4 August 2026
  • Licence: Apache 2.0, stated in the repository
  • Backing: Y Combinator, S24 batch, per the badge in the README and the YC company page
  • Founders: Arjun Maheswaran and Ramnique Singh, per ycombinator.com/companies/rowboat-labs
  • Tooling: connects to external tools over MCP, the Model Context Protocol

The part the video does not have room for

Read this bit before you install anything, because it will save you an afternoon.

Rowboat has changed. The version most articles and most YouTube videos describe is the one from around April 2025: you write what you want an agent to do in plain English, a copilot assembles a multi agent system for you, and you connect it to your tools. That is the version the internet remembers, and forks of it still carry that description.

What the repository describes today is different. It calls itself an open source AI coworker with memory: a desktop application with a local knowledge graph, an email client, background agents, a browser and a meeting note taker. Same project, same founders, same licence, different product.

Neither version is the wrong one to want. But if you install it expecting the copilot that writes a multi agent system for you and you get a desktop coworker, nothing has gone wrong, you have just read an old description. Check the README on the day you install it.

What Coinbase actually bought

This gets repeated wrongly a lot, so it is worth being exact. Coinbase did not buy Rowboat. Coinbase acquired Agara, an earlier company the founders were part of, in 2021. Rowboat is what they built afterwards and it is the thing they open sourced.

Why that distinction matters to you: it means the people behind this have shipped AI that a public company thought was worth buying, and then gave the next one away. That is the actual signal. An acquisition of Rowboat itself would mean the opposite.

Running it yourself

  1. Open github.com/rowboatlabs/rowboat and read the README first. It is the only description of the project that is current by definition.
  2. Follow the install steps in that README rather than any blog post, including this one. Setup steps for a fast moving project go stale in weeks.
  3. Check the LICENSE file if you plan to use it commercially. Apache 2.0 is permissive, but it has a notice requirement, and it has an express patent grant that some other licences do not.
  4. Look at the MCP configuration before you wire anything sensitive to it. MCP is how the project talks to outside tools, so that is where your credentials and your data boundaries live.
