On October 28, Anthropic, the creators of Claude, released a cite check for legal work. It compares a legal document with its sources and flags quotes that don't match, wrong page numbers, and sources that don't support the claim.
It matters because judges keep catching filings with quotes and cases an AI made up: 2,231 so far in one public tracker, and 1,288 of them were filed by people representing themselves. The prompt below runs the same check in any Claude chat.
What the check catches
| Verdict | What it means |
|---|---|
| MATCH | The quote is word for word and the page is right |
| WRONG WORDS | The quote differs from the source (each changed word is shown) |
| WRONG PAGE | The words exist, but on another page |
| DOESN'T SUPPORT | The source is real but doesn't back the point you use it for |
| NOT FOUND | The quote is nowhere in the source (likely made up) |
