Ponytail: The Lazy Senior Dev Skill That Makes Claude Write Half the Code
A free Claude Code skill that asks 'does this need to exist?' before every line. What it does, how to install it in two commands, how to turn it up or down, a prompt to test it on your own repo, and the catch
Ponytail is a free, open-source skill for Claude Code (and about 20 other coding agents). It makes Claude think like the laziest senior dev in the room: before it writes code, it checks whether the code needs to exist at all, and if it does, it writes the smallest thing that works.
Here's how it decides, how to install it, how to test it on your own project, and the catch.
How it decides what to write
- Does this need to exist? If not, Claude writes nothing.
- Is it already in this codebase? Then Claude reuses it.
- Does the standard library do it? Then Claude uses that.
- Does the platform already do it (the browser, the OS, the framework)? Then Claude uses that.
- Does an installed package already do it? Then Claude uses that.
- Can it be one line? Then it's one line.
- Only then: the minimum that works, plus one small test if the code has real logic.
The README's own example: asked for a date picker, Claude without the skill installed a library or built a whole calendar, 335 lines. With Ponytail it noticed the project already had an Input component and every browser has a date picker, put the two together, and wrote 10 lines.
