What actually changed
On August 25, 2026 Anthropic changed how Claude's memory works. It is worth being precise about this, because "the AI remembers you" has been claimed by everyone for two years and this is a different thing from what the others shipped.
Memory used to be a single rolling summary. Claude finished a conversation, wrote a paragraph about you, and that paragraph was the memory. You could not see inside it, you could not correct it, and it was written after the fact.
It is now a set of individual files, grouped by topic, and Claude adds to them while you are still talking rather than summarising once you are done. You can open any one of them, read it, change a line, or delete it.

The part almost nobody will use, and the reason this matters
The interesting feature here is not that it remembers. It is that the box opens.
Every assistant that has claimed memory handed you a black box and asked you to trust it. If it decided something wrong about you, that was the end of the conversation. This one hands you the filing cabinet.
If Claude has written down that you use a framework you moved off six months ago, or that you like a writing style you do not, you go into Topics, find that file, and fix the line. Almost nobody will bother. The people who do will have an assistant that is genuinely calibrated to them inside a week, and the gap widens from there.
Memory is only worth having if it can be corrected
Turning it on and checking what is there
- Open Settings, then Capabilities, then Memory. On Free, Pro and Max it is already on. If you are on a Team or Enterprise account it is controlled by your admin and it defaults to off, so if nothing is appearing this is why.
- Open Topics. This is the list of files. If you have been using Claude for a while there will already be entries in here.
- Read them. All of them. This is the only time it takes more than a minute, and it is the step that decides whether the rest is worth anything.
- Fix anything wrong. Each entry has a box that takes an instruction in plain words, or you can tell Claude directly in a chat.
- Delete anything you do not want it carrying. There is no penalty for an empty topic.
