One missed call is a customer already dialing your competitor
A plumber misses about a dozen calls a week. Every one of those is someone with a broken pipe who calls the next plumber ten seconds later. The owner is not lazy. He is under a sink with both hands full and cannot reach the phone. That gap is the entire business.
You build the shop one phone line that always gets answered. An AI voice picks up, talks to the customer, and books the job into the calendar. The owner pays you to keep it running. You build it one time, then reskin the same setup for the next shop with different words.
Claude writes the brain. You need a voice platform and a phone number to give that brain a mouth and ears, and most of them have a free tier to build on. Nothing below is copy and this is the whole thing, in order.
Part 1 of 5Pick one type of business
Do not sell to everyone. Pick one trade and get fluent in it. The best ones are the trades people call when something is already broken, because those callers cannot wait around and will not leave a voicemail.
- Plumbers. burst pipe, no hot water, a leak coming through a ceiling.
- Electricians. dead circuit, a panel sparking, half a house with no power.
- Dentists. cracked tooth, an abscess, a filling that just fell out.
- Auto shops. car will not start, a warning light, a tyre gone on the school run.
Use this once to size the opportunity before you ever pitch.
Paste This to Scope a Trade
I want to sell an AI phone answering service to [TRADE] businesses in [CITY].
Tell me: the five most common reasons a customer calls them, how urgent
each one is, what a single new job is worth on average, and what it costs
the owner every time a call goes to voicemail. Then write the one sentence
that would make an owner in this trade stop and listen
Part 2 of 5What the voice says, asks, and does
This is the build. The whole job is three things: what the assistant SAYS when it picks up, what it ASKS to qualify the caller, and what it DOES with the answers. Claude writes all three as one set of instructions you paste into your voice platform.
Paste This to Build the Brain
Write the full system prompt for an AI phone assistant that answers calls
for a [TRADE] business called [SHOP NAME] in [CITY]. It must cover three
things, clearly separated:
SAY. How it greets the caller in the first sentence. It states the shop
name and that it is the shop's assistant, warm and quick, never pretending
to be a person
ASK. The exact questions, in order, to qualify the job and capture what the
owner needs: name, callback number, the address, what is wrong in one line,
and how soon they need someone. Keep it to under 45 seconds.
DO. What happens with the answers. It offers the next open slot and books
it, reads the booking back to confirm, and sends the owner a text with the
name, number, address, problem, and time. If the caller describes a real
emergency, it stops qualifying and passes them straight to a person.
Write it as instructions the assistant follows, not a script it reads word
for word. Keep the language plain enough for a stressed caller.
Read the output once, fix anything that does not sound like this specific shop, and paste it into your voice platform as the agent's instructions. That is the product.
Part 3 of 5Give the brain a phone number
The brain needs a line to answer. A voice platform is the thing that connects a real phone number to the instructions from Part 2 and handles the talking. Pick any one that offers a voice agent and a number, build on the free tier first, and forward the shop's existing number to it so nothing about their setup changes.
- Number. get a local number from the platform, or forward the shop's current line to it so their printed number still works.
- Voice. paste the Part 2 instructions in as the agent's brain, pick a natural voice, and set the greeting to trigger on the first ring the shop cannot reach.
- Calendar and text. connect the owner's calendar so bookings land in it, and set the owner's mobile as the number that gets the summary text.
