What it actually is
NOMAD is not a chatbot. It is a management application, which the project calls the Command Center, plus an API that installs and runs a set of containerised tools for you through Docker. You install one thing; it handles the rest.
You reach all of it through a browser at localhost:8080. There is no desktop environment required, so a NOMAD box can sit headless in a cupboard and you use it from a laptop or a phone on the same network.
The point of the design is that everything it knows is already on the disk. An internet connection is needed while you install and while you choose to download more content. After that it runs with nothing plugged in.
What is inside it, and what actually powers each part
- AI Chat with Knowledge Base. Local chat via Ollama, or any OpenAI-compatible server such as LM Studio or llama.cpp. Document upload plus semantic search, with Qdrant doing the retrieval.
- Information Library. Offline Wikipedia, medical references, survival guides and ebooks, served by Kiwix from ZIM archive files.
- Education Platform. Khan Academy courses with progress tracking and multiple users, through Kolibri.
- Offline Maps. Downloadable regional maps you can view and search, via ProtoMaps.
- Data Tools. Encryption, encoding, hashing and analysis through CyberChef.
- Notes. Local markdown note-taking with FlatNotes.
- Supply Depot. A one-click catalogue of extra apps: PDF tools, a file browser, an ebook library, a password manager, plus the ability to run your own containers.
- System Benchmark. Scores your hardware and posts to a community leaderboard if you want it to.
